Nitecore 23

Written by

For those who prioritize usability in an everyday carry flashlight, the Nitecore EDC23 offers a seamless experience with intuitive controls, a practical design, and reliable performance. Let’s break down what makes this flashlight stand out from the crowd.

Ease of Use and Handling

After using a few flat flashlights, the Nitecore EDC23 is a breath of fresh air. Too many of them are so similar it’s crazy, with companies more interested in copying one another than being innovative. Enter the fine folks from Nitecore. Let’s take a look at what separates this guy from the pack.

Visually, this looks similar to other flat flashlights, but that’s where the similarity ends. The EDC23 is more compact than its larger brethren (the 25, 27, and 29 models) and fits nicely in the hand. At just 4.05 inches in length and weighing 3.56 ounces, the slim, flat profile prevents bulkiness, making it an easy companion for daily carry.

One of the intuitive features is the dual tail switch system. The smaller of the two buttons on the back turns on the light with a solid press, while half-pressing cycles through brightness levels. The larger button is dedicated to turbo and strobe modes—a half-press activates turbo, which only lasts a short time due to the intense heat, and a full press activates strobe for self-defense or signaling.

I also love the texturing on the sides, which ensures a solid grip, even in wet or cold conditions. Another thoughtful touch is the sliding lock switch on the side, which prevents accidental activation when carrying the flashlight in a pocket or bag. I’ve had too many lights turn on unintentionally, so this feature is a lifesaver.

Everyday Functionality

The EDC23 offers five brightness levels, ensuring there’s a setting for every situation. The transition between modes is smooth and straightforward. Here’s how each mode is practically useful:

One of my favorite features of the light is the OLED display. This is a game-changer and takes the guesswork out of determining battery status, lock status, and brightness levels. Pressing the button to change modes shows you the exact lumen output and remaining runtime. The battery level meter is another fantastic addition, letting you know when you need to recharge before heading out. With other lights, battery status is often a rough estimate—this OLED display is precise and incredibly useful.

Battery and Changing Convenience

The EDC23 is powered by a built-in 1,500mAh lithium-ion battery, ensuring long-lasting performance. The USB-C charging port allows for fast and convenient recharging in just 1.5 hours. The rubber flap covering the charging port has done a solid job keeping out dirt and moisture.

Compared to other lights, charging the EDC23 is completely hassle-free, thanks to the OLED display showing real-time battery status. This removes any guesswork about when the light will die on you.

Durability in Everyday Use

With an IP54 rating, the EDC23 is resistant to dust and light splashes, making it suitable for most environments but not ideal for heavy rain or submersion. The 2-meter impact resistance ensures durability against accidental drops, providing peace of mind for those who carry their flashlight daily.

Carry Options and Pocket Clip

The Nitecore EDC23 comes with a lanyard that has a mini carabiner and an installed pocket clip. This clip is a beast—long and incredibly tight, ensuring the flashlight won’t budge when clipped to a pocket. While I appreciate the security, I feel the clip could be more minimalistic for ease of use. I’ve been told the mounting point can take a Benchmade pocket clip as a replacement, though I haven’t tried that yet.

Final Verdict: A Practical Choice for Daily Carry

The Nitecore EDC23 shines in its usability, making it a practical and reliable choice for anyone needing a high-performance flashlight without unnecessary complexity. The intuitive controls, comfortable grip, and versatile brightness settings make it a great addition to any EDC kit.

Pros:

Compact and lightweight for easy carry

Simple and intuitive control layout

OLED display for real-time information

USB-C charging with quick recharge time

Sliding lock switch prevents accidental activation

Excellent texturing for grip

Cons:

IP54 rating limits water resistance

Non-replaceable battery may be a drawback for some users

Pocket clip could be deeper for better carry

For those who value usability and reliability, the Nitecore EDC23 is a flashlight that delivers without unnecessary complications.
