HORL 3 Cruise Featured

Written by

As someone who has extensively used the HORL 2, I was curious to see how its successor, the HORL 3 Cruise, would stack up. The HORL 2 set a high standard with its sleek wooden body, premium feel, and interchangeable discs, allowing users to customize their sharpening experience. In contrast, the HORL 3 Cruise takes a different approach—streamlined, affordable, and environmentally conscious.

Design and Build Quality

The HORL 3 Cruise's recycled plastic body introduces a tactile experience quite different from its wooden predecessor. While the wood provided a sense of warmth and luxury, the new material feels utilitarian, akin to a plastic cutting board. Visually, the recycled #tide Ocean Material features subtle flecks of color, adding character while reinforcing HORL's commitment to ecological conservation.

While this shift sacrifices some of the aesthetic appeal of the HORL 2, it speaks to the brand's efforts to prioritize sustainability. The Cruise feels robust, and its lighter weight improves portability—ideal for users seeking a durable yet eco-friendly sharpening solution.

Performance and Sharpening Experience

Performance-wise, the HORL 3 Cruise holds its own against the HORL 2. The diamond grinding disc has reportedly improved, with an 80% increase in steel removal efficiency. While I didn’t notice a drastic difference in cutting speed compared to the HORL 2, the Cruise did an excellent job restoring sharp edges in a reasonable amount of time.

That said, the HORL system doesn’t inherently produce sharper or longer-lasting edges than other high-quality sharpeners. Its true allure lies in its simplicity and heritage. Unlike traditional sharpening setups that require swapping stones, using lubricants, or adjusting components, the HORL system reduces the process to a single rolling motion. This intuitive design makes it accessible to anyone, even those with no prior sharpening experience.

The act of sharpening becomes almost meditative—a repetitive, smooth motion that achieves consistent results without the usual complexities. It's incredible that sharpening can feel this effortless.

Magnetic Angle Guide System

The magnetic guide system remains consistent with other HORL models, offering two fixed angles: 15° for Japanese-style blades and 20° for European or general-purpose knives. These preset angles cater to a wide variety of users and applications.

The upgraded magnets in the HORL 3 base represent a welcome improvement. On older models, larger knives sometimes rocked on the guide, causing minor frustrations. The stronger magnets in the HORL 3 base firmly hold knives in place, ensuring a seamless sharpening experience even with larger blades.

Simplified Sharpening with Fixed Discs

One key distinction between the HORL 2 and HORL 3 Cruise is the sharpening setup. The HORL 3 Cruise eliminates interchangeable discs in favor of a fixed system, featuring a diamond grinding disc on one side and a honing disc on the other. This design minimizes decision fatigue for users who might be overwhelmed by grit progression or customization options.

HORL claims the fixed discs are durable enough to last a lifetime under normal conditions. While diamond abrasives will inevitably wear down over time, I believe this claim is reasonable for most home kitchen scenarios. Light, consistent pressure during sharpening will significantly extend the lifespan of the discs. However, heavy-handed use or attempts to reprofile blades could accelerate wear.

The simplified setup is perfect for everyday users, but sharpening enthusiasts who enjoy finer control or higher grits may prefer the interchangeable options of the HORL 2.

Compared to the Competition

In a crowded market filled with subpar pull-through sharpeners and aggressive carbide systems, the HORL 3 Cruise stands out as a reliable, user-friendly alternative. Priced at around $99, it offers excellent value for its performance, build quality, and sustainable materials.

Unlike many competitors, the HORL sharpener is gentle on knives, ensuring edges remain intact without over-grinding or damaging the blade. Its design is intuitive enough for beginners yet precise enough to satisfy more experienced users.

Final Thoughts

The HORL 3 Cruise is a fantastic tool for anyone looking to maintain their kitchen knives or occasionally touch up a pocket knife. It’s not intended for heavy-duty tasks like re-profiling or repairing severely damaged blades—but that’s not its purpose. Instead, it excels as a low-maintenance system that keeps knives sharp and ready for optimal performance.

When comparing the HORL 2 and HORL 3, it’s clear they cater to different audiences. The HORL 2, with its customizable discs and premium materials, is ideal for professionals or knife enthusiasts who want the best for their edges. The HORL 3 Cruise, on the other hand, is designed for the everyday user—a no-fuss, approachable solution that delivers consistent results.

For those seeking simplicity, affordability, and eco-conscious design without sacrificing performance, the HORL 3 Cruise is an excellent investment. It’s a testament to how sharpening can be both accessible and effective, proving that even the "Average Joe" can achieve razor-sharp results with ease.
