Roxon Flex Companion Review: A Pocket Powerhouse for Customization and Everyday Carry

Roxon has always been a brand with an eye for innovation, and with the Flex series, they’ve accomplished something truly groundbreaking—the modular multitool. For decades, DIY enthusiasts and tool hobbyists have dreamt of a multitool that could be customized to fit their specific needs, rather than just accepting a fixed set of tools where some might be redundant or unnecessary. With the Flex, Roxon created an adaptable system that quickly won fans in the multitool community. Now, they’ve refined and reimagined that concept with the Flex Companion, a compact, customizable multitool designed for users who don’t need pliers every day but still want a reliable toolkit in their pocket.

The Roxon Flex Companion retains the modularity that made the original Flex model such a hit, but instead of focusing on pliers and heavy-duty tools, it zeroes in on essential everyday carry (EDC) tools that you’re more likely to need on the go. In many situations, all I need is a solid knife, a couple of screwdrivers, and maybe a pair of scissors. The Companion meets those needs in a convenient, pocket-friendly format.

Build and Design: Compact and Practical

The Flex Companion sports a compact design, measuring 3.5 x 0.94 x 0.9 inches (90 x 24 x 23 mm) and weighing 5.5 oz (156.1 g). While it has a boxier appearance compared to its larger counterpart, this form factor suits the tool’s purpose—it’s rugged, straightforward, and ready for EDC demands. The black G10 scales on the handle provide a well-balanced feel, with enough grip for secure handling without becoming overly abrasive on pockets. As someone who appreciates tools that look clean even after daily use, I find the black G10 perfect for hiding the wear and tear of everyday life.

The Flex Companion has two locks on the outside of the tool. One lock disengages tools from the locked position, pushes them up for easier access, and doubles as a way to unlock and swap tools. It’s an innovative feature that manages multiple functions with a single mechanism, saving space and keeping things user-friendly. The second lock is a slide switch that prevents tools from coming out accidentally.

Tool Loadout: Essentials with Flexibility

The standard set of tools in the Flex Companion includes:

One-Hand Opening Knife: This D2 steel blade is sturdy and versatile, and Roxon offers both left- and right-handed options, a rarity in the multitool market. The one-handed accessibility is a big win for those of us who need a quick, reliable knife, and D2 steel is a solid choice for edge retention and toughness.

Scissors: Ideal for everything from cutting cordage to opening packaging, these scissors are well-made and precise. They handle general tasks effortlessly and are robust enough to tackle tougher materials as needed.

File with Ruler and Flat Driver: This multitasking tool combines a ruler, file, and flathead screwdriver in one. It’s the kind of hybrid tool that proves its worth over time, especially when you need something to smooth down rough edges or tighten a loose screw.

Saw: The saw is small but effective, suitable for light tasks like cutting a dowel or a small branch. It’s a handy addition that gives the Flex Companion more versatility for outdoor or emergency situations.

Awl: Sharp and effective, the awl is designed for puncturing and sewing repairs, especially useful for leather or fabric. It’s a practical tool that comes in handy more often than you might think.

1/4-inch Bit Driver (with #2 Phillips): The dedicated 1/4-inch hex driver is a standout, especially compared to the flatter 2D options that some multitool companies use. This design provides better torque and feels secure in use. The #2 Phillips bit included is one of the most universally useful driver sizes, and the versatility of a hex driver means you can expand its functionality with additional bits.

One of the best parts about the Flex Companion is that, thanks to the Flex system, this loadout is just the beginning. The modular design allows you to customize the tool setup to fit your specific needs. If you need more driver bits or a different kind of blade, swapping out tools is simple, and Roxon’s lineup of accessory tools keeps expanding.

Extra Modules: Unique and Daily-Ready

The Flex Companion also comes with a unique accessory tool that houses a pen, tweezers, and a sewing needle. While I haven’t yet put this module through its paces, it’s clear Roxon is aiming to make this a daily utility tool for EDC fans. The pen could be useful for quick notes, while the tweezers and needle are ideal for removing that pesky sliver or picking up small objects. For someone like me, this set of tools has plenty of potential for unexpected daily needs.

Modular Access and Locking Mechanism

With the Flex Companion, Roxon refined their locking mechanisms to make the tool’s modular system as intuitive as possible. The main arc-shaped lock on the side of the tool is key to accessing each of the Companion’s features. Pushing this arc-shaped lock forward pushes up the tools slightly, allowing you to select the one you want and lock it in place for use. This lock allows tools to remain firmly in place during use, and a quick slide back releases the lock when you’re done.

To swap tools, you pull the main lock back fully, it will click and keep it open. Then, simply open the tool you want to remove, pull it up and out, and insert your replacement tool the same way. It’s a straightforward process, designed with ease and efficiency in mind.

Performance and Practicality

The Flex Companion is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for an adaptable, compact multitool that fits comfortably into an EDC rotation. Without the added bulk of pliers, it focuses on essentials that many users find themselves reaching for throughout the day. The modularity is a game-changer—it lets you design your tool setup based on your own needs, making it a true companion for everyday tasks.

Final Thoughts: A Modern Multitool for the Customization Era

Roxon has once again shown their commitment to innovation and user-driven design. The Flex Companion is more than just a pared-down version of the original Flex; it’s a well-thought-out tool tailored to modern EDC needs. It offers all the functionality a minimalist could want and serves as a perfect addition for those who already own the regular Flex model. As someone who values practicality, flexibility, and a tool that truly meets daily needs, I’m excited to see where Roxon takes the Flex lineup next.

For those looking to pare down their carry while still retaining flexibility, the Flex Companion is a welcome addition to any toolkit. Roxon has made an impressive entry into the world of customizable multitools, and the Flex Companion is proof they’re only getting started.
